Book High-Speed Train Tickets in China: Passport, 12306, and Boarding Rules

Most book high-speed train tickets in China problems are not about picking the wrong train. They are about passport verification and using the same document you booked with at the gate. A valid e-ticket with a mismatched surname, or an unverified 12306 profile, still stops you at Beijing South or Shanghai Hongqiao. This page is buying, changing, and boarding. Channel, document, and refund at a glance

• 12306 English site or app — register with the passport you will carry. Complete identity verification before you need a peak-week seat. Pay with a method 12306 accepts that day.
• Station counter — possible when the window is open and your passport is accepted. Queues grow before statutory holidays. Not a backup for a sold-out train the morning you travel.
• A booking agent or your ground operator — they still need the same passport spelling. They cannot invent inventory 12306 does not have.
• Name rule — the Latin name on the ticket must match the machine-readable zone on the passport you show at the gate. A nickname or a missing middle name is a common stop.

Register and verify before you need the seat

Bring the original passport, not a photo of it. Many gates read the passport; some travelers are sent to a manual lane. Arrive with station-buffer time, especially at Beijing South, Shanghai Hongqiao, and Guangzhou South. The ticket is tied to that passport. A second person’s passport will not walk you through.

If someone else buys the ticket

Give them the passport spelling exactly as printed. Pay methods on 12306 sometimes want WeChat or Alipay; that is a wallet problem, not a train-class problem.
