China Airports: Land Where the Trip Starts, Leave Where It Ends

The useful China airports question is not which terminal has the nicer lounge. It is which city you land in on day one, and which city you fly home from at the end. Those two cities do not have to be the same.

This page is that routing choice. It is not a list of nineteen airports, and it is not a bus timetable. Airlines change whether a Beijing flight uses Capital or Daxing. Trust the airport printed on the ticket.

Land in the first city you will actually visit

If the first walking days are Beijing — a Mutianyu wall morning, a Forbidden City day — the long-haul should end in Beijing. Capital Airport is PEK. Daxing is PKX. Which one you get is the airline’s decision. A four- or five-day Beijing land module is built on arriving here, not on landing somewhere else and flying in the same afternoon.

If the first walking days are Shanghai — Bund light, lanes, a water-town day — the long-haul should end at Pudong (PVG) more often than Hongqiao (SHA). Hongqiao is the domestic and some regional tool. Long-haul still usually prints PVG.

If the first walking days are Guangzhou food and the gorge day after, Baiyun (CAN) is the door. Guilin and Yangshuo are still a flight or a long rail day away. Landing in Guangzhou does not put you on the Li River that afternoon.

First city, corridor, and visa path

• Beijing first (PEK or PKX) — classic corridor start. Palace day and Mutianyu morning need a full city stay, not a same-day inbound hop. Visa path: whatever the three-path page already decided.
• Shanghai first (usually PVG) — close or open on the river. Hongqiao is not the default long-haul print.
• Guangzhou first (CAN) — south start for food and a later Guilin block. The karst day still needs its own night in Yangshuo or a transfer you have counted.
• Open-jaw — land in the first walking city, leave from the last. A south start and a Beijing or Shanghai exit is normal. A same-day extra domestic flight after a long-haul is a day you do not get back.

You can start in the south and fly home from the north

Yunnan or Guilin as the first walking block, then a domestic flight to Xi’an or Beijing, and a long-haul home from PEK, PKX, or PVG, is a common private-ground spine. The cost is the extra domestic ticket and the transfer day. The saving is not walking a trophy airport that is not on the route.

Check the airport against the visa path

240-hour transit and some visa-free lists name permitted ports. The airport on the ticket has to sit on that list. A pretty arrival hall does not fix a port the scheme does not allow. Confirm the path first, then pick the city.
