China Travel Visa Application: Appointments, Fingerprints, and What Happens After You File

China Travel Visa Application: Appointments, Fingerprints, and What Happens After You File

Application Starts After You Know Which Path You Are On

If you are searching "China travel visa application," the assumption is that you already know you need a visa. The question is what happens after that — how to file, where to go, how long it takes, and what happens in between.

If the visa path itself is not clear — whether you need a tourist visa, whether you qualify for a transit exemption, or whether a visa-on-arrival applies to your situation — the visa decision page covers the three entry paths before the application steps begin.

Assuming the tourist visa (L visa) is the correct path, the application process is broadly similar across countries but varies in two specifics that matter: which visa application center handles your country, and how long the processing window is. The steps below describe the general sequence. The specific center name, appointment system, and processing time for your country are on the website of the Chinese embassy or consulate where you will apply.

Appointments, Forms, and Biometrics — The Usual Sequence

The application for a Chinese tourist visa runs in this order:

  1. Complete the online form. The Chinese visa application form (Form CO.8) is completed online at the relevant consulate's website. The form asks for travel dates, accommodation in China, and passport details. Complete it before booking the appointment — the appointment slot is limited and the form should be ready when the slot opens.
  2. Book an appointment at the visa application service center. In most countries, the visa application is submitted at a contracted service center rather than directly at the embassy or consulate. The service center handles document collection and initial processing. The appointment must be booked in advance; walk-ins are not accepted at most centers during peak travel seasons.
  3. Attend the appointment in person. Fingerprints are collected at the appointment. All applicants — including children — must attend in person. The center will review the documents, collect the fees, and issue a collection receipt.
  4. Wait for processing. Processing times vary by center and by season. The service center will give an estimated return date on the collection receipt. During peak travel periods — Chinese New Year, the summer months, and the October Golden Week window — processing times extend.
  5. Collect the passport or use a courier service. The visa is collected at the same center, or courier delivery is arranged when the appointment is booked.

Processing times, appointment availability, and fee amounts follow the current schedule at the visa center where you apply. These change and are not the same across countries. The specific center for your location is on the website of the Chinese diplomatic mission in your country.

How Long It Takes — and What to Do While You Wait

The visa processing window is a range, not a guarantee. A standard processing time might be listed as four to seven business days, but the actual return date depends on the center's workload, the time of year, and whether the application is straightforward or requires additional review.

While waiting, the productive tasks are to fix the arrival city and the night count for the first stop in China. The visa does not determine the itinerary — the itinerary determines the visa application. If the arrival city and the night count are not yet set, using the waiting window to finalize them is the move that prevents a re-application if the itinerary changes after the visa is issued.

After the visa is issued, the first night in Beijing — or whichever city is the arrival point — should not be a full sightseeing day. Arriving in the evening and filling the next morning with the palace is a common mistake that a four-night Beijing trip cannot afford. The standard Beijing four-night itinerary needs the arrival night to be a rest night, with the first real site day starting the morning after.

For the material checklist — what to bring to the appointment — the embassy or consulate website lists the folder contents and the common reasons applications are returned. Assemble the folder before the appointment slot, not at it.

For the broader itinerary question, the planning page covers the sequence of decisions that should be resolved before the visa appointment.

What TravelToQin Can Help With

We do not submit visa applications on behalf of travelers, and we do not guarantee visa outcomes — those decisions rest with the applicant and the issuing authority. What we do is align the itinerary with the visa category and the stated travel dates. If the trip dates in the application and the itinerary dates do not match, we can adjust the private day shape to reflect what was submitted.

Once the visa is in hand, we build the private ground for the cities and nights that the application covers.

Send the passport nationality, the planned entry date, and the arrival city — we will confirm the arrival-night shape and begin the private ground planning for the cities that follow.

Day trip from Guangzhou

We were picked up in a private van for a day trip outside of Guangzhou. We visited the Jurassic Park the waterfalls rafting Mario kart the drive approximately 1 1/2 hours from our hotel. It was very comfortable ride when we first arrived. It was raining, but we were getting wet with some of the experiences that we went on anyway so we didn't matter Stella. Our guide was wonderful and we had such a fun day with her. Some great photo locations in some experiences that I would never have had in Australia. When we arrived at 12 pm, the crowds were very low but as we were leaving around 3 pm it was extremely busy. Lots of tourist buses had arrived. Overall it was a wonderful day. This trip would be best for families, but also adults looking for a thrill. Please be mindful there are a lot of stairs and walking and we did come across a few older people who had difficulty with the stairs.

TraveltoQin Made Our Dream China Holiday Absolutely Perfect! 5 stars and more from start to finish

From the very first moment we contacted TraveltoQin through Instagram, right up until we boarded our flight back home, our entire trip was absolutely seamless. Richard was incredible in organising our itinerary and patiently answering every single question we had in the lead-up to our holiday. Everything was so well thought out and tailored perfectly to our family. Throughout the trip, every driver we had was kind, polite, and professional, and the guides were truly some of the best we’ve ever experienced. A special mention has to go to Yan—she was absolutely fantastic. To say she went above and beyond would be an understatement. Not only was she an amazing guide, but she also helped plan our free time and told us exactly what to do on days we didn’t opt for a guide, ensuring we made the most of every moment. The hotels selected for us ticked all our boxes. I had casually mentioned at one point that my boys love to swim and that we’d prefer hotels with pools. Ivy, who was available 24/7 throughout the trip to answer every question and help with anything we needed, took this on board immediately. She even went as far as checking whether the pools at our booked hotels were actually operational. When she found out that the last hotel in Shenzhen had maintenance on its pool, she proactively offered me not one, but two alternative hotel options—both of which were massive upgrades from what we had originally booked, at absolutely no extra cost. I was genuinely overwhelmed by their kindness, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail. Nothing was ever too much trouble. It was such a pleasure meeting Kevin and Ivy on our last day. One thing that really stood out to me is that this is the first company I’ve ever dealt with that didn’t pressure or push me to leave a review. That alone speaks volumes—they clearly do what they do because they genuinely love their job and care deeply about their clients’ experience. If you’re planning a holiday in China, save yourself the time and go straight to TraveltoQin. I honestly doubt anyone could outdo them in terms of service, attention to detail, and pricing. Just trust them—you’ll be in the very best hands.

Exceptional Tour with Stella!

Stella was an excellent guide and made our trip truly enjoyable. She was punctual and was already waiting for us at our hotel at 10:00 a.m. She provided clear instructions before each stop and thoughtfully prepared raincoats for us. We first visited the main building and then began our hike up the mountain, where we enjoyed the breathtaking scenery and took many wonderful photos. We also had a great time riding the summer toboggan and racing the cars. Stella’s professionalism, kindness, and attention to detail made the entire experience memorable. We highly recommend her and would gladly join another tour with her in the future.

Fantastic Goulong Gorge Experience with Tony Walker

Our family had an absolutely wonderful day trip to Goulong Gorge during our visit to Guangzhou, and a big part of that was thanks to Travel to Qin and our outstanding guide, Tony Walker. From start to finish, Tony was friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful. He made everything easy and stress-free, allowing us to simply relax and enjoy the experience. His enthusiasm, attention to detail, and genuine care for his guests really stood out. Goulong Gorge itself was spectacular, with beautiful scenery, exciting attractions, and unforgettable views. Tony ensured we got the most out of our visit, helping us navigate the attractions, sharing interesting information along the way, and making sure everyone in our family was comfortable and having a great time. If you’re visiting Guangzhou and considering a trip to Goulong Gorge, I highly recommend Travel to Qin and especially Tony Walker as your guide. Exceptional customer care by Team Travel to Qin! (solo female traveller)

I was a solo female traveller. From planning the trip to being taken care of, I fully recommend the team TRAVEL TO QIN. The full time butler service by Ivy , to the tour guide Fish, to the driver Annie.. they provided me with exceptional care and service. Fish was so kind to even be my personal photographer and videographer :) They were so kitti make my birthday also special which was totally not in the plan and surprise to me! They were also on time every day to start the day from picking me up to dropping me off at the station. The unexpected rainy conditions and public holiday perhaps needed a little more guidance for me to prepare in advance. Overall, I'd recommend this team. They are flexible on the plan, willing to accommodate your needs during plan phase, extremely professional and very good customer care. Will surely choose them and Fish next time !!!! Signing off for now.. happy customer

11 days China Holiday July 2026

Right from the planning phase to the execution, Kevin and his company Travel To Quin had been exceptional. We contacted them in Feb for our holiday in July and they meticulously understood our needs and then designed the itinerary accordingly. At China we were greated with a large bouquet of flowers by an english speaking travel guide and a car with driver was available for us everyday. The four star hotels booked were good. The Hilton in Guangzhou was the best. Ivy was nearly available 24/7 during our China stay solving our problems, giving advice, arranging and rearranging bookings etc. The tour guides for our trip were excellent, especially Keena at Shanghai stood out due to her exceptional kindness. During the whole 11 days of our holiday, the company accomodated all our needs and was transparent in their price policies. The company never made us feel that we were in an unknown country, especially Ivy was like an invisible guardian angle for our group, available 24/7 with problem solutions and options. We were a group of 7 consisting of 2 separate families, hence we have different needs, but the company was excellent in catering to the individual requirements of 7 guests. We thoroughly enjoyed our 11 days holiday, where we visiting Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Schenzen. We will definitely recommend Travel to Quin to others for their China travel partner and will use them in our next trip to China as well.
