City Wall Xian China: Ride a Segment, Not Warriors Day
The Xi'an City Wall is a 14 km loop around the old city. Most visitors try to ride the full loop in one go. The honest answer: the loop is optional, the wall is a city-day module, and the wall does not stack with the Terracotta Warriors day. The wall is also the practical backup when the Shaanxi History Museum queues are unmanageable.

This Is the City Day, Not a Side Quest After the Pits
On the four-night Xi'an product, the wall is on Day 2 — the city day, alongside the Muslim Quarter, the Bell Tower, and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. The Terracotta Warriors are on Day 3, an hour east in Lintong. The wall and the Warriors are two different days; they do not stack.
Trying to do the wall after the Warriors site means a 5 p.m. return to the city, a rushed visit to the wall, and an empty evening. The wall is the morning or the afternoon of Day 2, not a post-Warriors add-on.
A Full Loop Is Optional
The wall loop runs about 13.7 to 14 km around the rectangular old city. A bike ride of the full loop takes about 2 hours at casual pace, including stops for photos. The wall is mostly flat, with a few short climbs at the gate towers.
Three patterns work:
- Full loop (about 2 hours of riding): for parties comfortable on a bike for 2 hours with a few stops. The South Gate (Yongningmen) is the most common starting point.
- Gate-to-gate segment (about 1 to 1.5 hours of riding): ride from one gate to the next and walk down. The South Gate to the West Gate segment is the cleanest short ride.
- Walking the wall (about 4 hours): for parties that prefer walking over biking. The full loop on foot is a half-day.
For travelers with mobility constraints, walking a short segment near the South Gate is workable. For travelers with no mobility concerns, the gate-to-gate ride is the practical compromise.
Bike rentals at the wall are available on-site. The bike options and the rental rates are managed by the wall's own operator; the day-of rental is the operational truth. TravelToQin does not lock rental rates.
The South Gate Is the Most Common Starting Point
Yongningmen (the South Gate) is the largest and most restored gate. The bike rental, the access ramp, and the orientation signs sit at the South Gate. Most visitors start here.
The other gates — the North Gate (Anyuanmen), the East Gate (Changlemen), the West Gate (Andingmen) — are also accessible, with ramps and rental options, but with fewer visitors. For travelers who want to skip the South Gate crowd, the West Gate or the East Gate is the practical alternative.
Museum Sold Out Does Not Mean Stack the Wall With the Warriors
The Shaanxi History Museum is the practical Day 2 morning option alongside the wall. The museum's timed-entry tickets often sell out days in advance, especially in peak season. When the museum is sold out, the wall becomes the backup morning plan — not a different day's plan.
The honest adjustment when the museum is sold out:
- Day 2 morning: wall instead of the museum
- Day 2 afternoon: Muslim Quarter, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Bell Tower area
- Day 3: Terracotta Warriors as planned
The wall does not move to Day 3. The Warriors do not move to Day 2. Each day keeps its own anchor site.
For travelers who specifically want both the wall and the museum on Day 2, the morning wall + afternoon museum is workable, with the museum timed-entry ticket pre-booked.
