Hangzhou 3 Days 2 Nights Tour: One Whole West Lake Day

Hangzhou in three nights fits one full West Lake day, one Longjing tea half-day, and one Lingyin Temple half-day. Wuzhen does not fit. The water town is a 1.5-hour drive each way from Hangzhou — adding it eats the West Lake day and turns three nights into a transfer-and-checkout scramble.

Three Days in Hangzhou: One Whole West Lake Day

The structure that works:

• Day 1 — West Lake full day: Su Causeway, Leifeng Pagoda, Gushan Island, Louwailou lunch, Broken Bridge, Pinghu Qiuyue evening
• Day 2 — Longjing tea half-day + Hefang Street half-day: China National Tea Museum and Longjing Village in the morning, Hefang Street or Southern Song Imperial Street in the afternoon
• Day 3 — Lingyin Temple half-day + departure buffer: Lingyin Temple and Feilai Peak sculptures in the morning, airport or rail station transfer

Three sites this page does not cover in three nights: Wuzhen (single-day trip from Shanghai, see the Shanghai add-on product), Shaoxing (Lu Xun heritage is a different trip entirely), and Qiandao Lake (full-day drive, eats Day 1).

Day 1 — West Lake as One Full Day

West Lake is 6.4 km around the perimeter and cannot be toured in a half-day without skipping either the lake or the surrounding hills. The standard full-day route runs in this order:

• Morning: Su Causeway (walk or e-bike from north to south), Leifeng Pagoda at the southern end
• Midday: Louwailou restaurant on Gushan Island for the classical Hangzhou cuisine — the West Lake Vinegar Fish is the signature dish
• Afternoon: Gushan Island and the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, then continue along the causeway or through the Solitary Hill area
• Evening: Broken Bridge and Pinghu Qiuyue (Calm Lake, Autumn Moon) viewpoint at sunset, return to hotel

Three additions this day does not need: the Lingyin Temple (move to Day 3), the Longjing tea fields (move to Day 2 morning), or the Hefang Street snack alley (move to Day 2 afternoon).

West Lake is free to enter. Specific venues like Leifeng Pagoda and some museum halls charge admission; opening times follow the official park schedule.

Day 2 — Longjing Tea Fields and Hefang Street

The China National Tea Museum has two sections: the main building in Longjing Village and a second branch on the west side of West Lake. The Longjing Village section is the half-day target — the museum itself plus a walk through the surrounding tea fields, ending at a tea house for tasting.

Longjing (Dragon Well) tea is one of China's ten famous teas. The village itself sits inside the city, accessible by car or by walking from the Yang Causeway area. The half-day runs 3 to 4 hours including the museum visit, the field walk, and the tea stop.

Afternoon: Hefang Street or the Southern Song Imperial Street. Hefang Street is the practical eating-and-souvenir street near the Drum Tower, similar in function to a tourist eating strip. The Southern Song Imperial Street is the same area but with more historical reference to the imperial capital layout. Both fit a 90-minute window.

Do not stack Longjing, Lingyin Temple, and Hefang Street on the same day. Three half-day venues compressed into one afternoon means the tea fields get cut, and Longjing is the most demanding of the three to walk.

Day 3 — Lingyin Temple Half-Day and Departure

Lingyin Temple sits at the foot of the Feilai Peak (Flying Arrival Peak). The temple complex includes the main halls (the Mahavira Hall, the药师佛殿), and the Feilai Peak itself holds a dense collection of Buddhist rock carvings from the Tang through Song dynasties.

Budget 2 to 3 hours for the temple and the carvings. The Yongfu Temple next door is quieter and worth a 30-minute side visit if the morning is open. Lingyin Temple closes earlier in winter; check the official hours before planning.

After Lingyin Temple, transfer to the airport or rail station. Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) is a 30 to 45-minute drive from the Lingyin area depending on traffic. Hangzhou East Railway Station (the high-speed rail hub) is closer, about 25 to 35 minutes.

If the flight or train is later in the day, the afternoon opens up for a return visit to West Lake or a quiet stop at the Guo Zhuang Garden (a small classical garden on the western edge of West Lake, often missed by West Lake day-trippers).

What Three Nights Will Not Hold

The following are out of scope for a three-night Hangzhou trip:

• Wuzhen water town — 1.5-hour drive each way; eats the West Lake day
• Shaoxing — different heritage route (Lu Xun, ancient water towns); see the separate Shaoxing product
• Qiandao Lake — full-day drive, not recommended from Hangzhou
• Fuyang or Tonglu — both are county-level nature areas, not city trips
