Travel in China: Choose a Trip Type Before Cities
If travel in China begins as twelve city names linked like a race, what you reach is fatigue with photographs. China is large enough that the first decision is trip type—heritage, modern cities, nature/highland, or food—then whether you stay on the dense eastern corridor or add long-distance chapters. Pin the map last.

Pick a Primary Trip Type
- Heritage spine: Beijing + Xi’an (+ Shanghai close). Palace axes, clay army, one modern contrast.
- Landscape / highland: Guilin/Yangshuo, Zhangjiajie, or Yunnan lakes—fewer museums, more weather dependence.
- Modern cities: Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou—design, food, rail ease, skyline nights.
- Food-led travel: build days around markets, regional kitchens, and recovery blocks—not around monument density alone.
Choose one primary type. A second type works as a side dish in two weeks. Four types racing for the same days usually means nobody gets enough time. A southern beach recovery after a dense north is a side dish, not a fourth equal spine.

Two Honest Maps Inside One Country
Dense eastern corridor
Beijing–Xi’an–Shanghai–Hangzhou–Guangzhou hops are high-speed-rail friendly when nights are protected. Palace geometry, living crafts, and tea that asks you to sit belong here. At public treasures, excellence is expert-led interpretation and intelligent timing—not a fantasy of empty halls.
Long-distance chapters

Silk Road stretches, Yunnan circuits, and far southwest landscape need flights and buffer nights. Do not run both maps on the same tempo—eastern rail days and highland recovery nights are different machines. Old brick beside Shenzhen glass can share one trip if each chapter has nights to land.
Infrastructure Decisions Early
- Visa and entry path for your nationality (rules change—verify current policy).
- Payment setup (cards + mobile pay readiness).
- Travel insurance that matches your activities.
- City-count ceiling before the pin map grows.
- Connectors: rail for mid-length eastern hops; fly long west/southwest legs; private transfers on arrival days and heritage mornings.
