Bifengxia Is in Ya'an, Inside a Scenic Area
Bifengxia is a giant panda base inside the Bifengxia scenic area in Ya'an city, Sichuan, about 150 km south of central Chengdu. The base is not in Chengdu. It is not the city panda base near the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and it is not reachable as a morning stop on a Chengdu trip. It is a separate destination, in a different city, with its own ticket and its own day shape.
The standard panda day on a Chengdu trip is the city base — the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chenghua district, north of the city center. Bifengxia is the answer to "which base if you have already done the city one and want something different," not the answer to "the panda day in Chengdu."
Three- and Four-Day Chengdu Keep the City Base
For a three- or four-night Chengdu itinerary, the panda morning is the city base. The day shape runs:
- Early start. Out of the hotel by 7:30 a.m. to reach the base by 8:00. The pandas are most active in the first two hours after morning feed.
- Late morning. Walk the adult panda enclosures and the nursery area, with optional time in the panda museum.
- Midday. Lunch in the city or a tea-house block in the People's Park. Return to the hotel or move to the afternoon's second site.
This is the right day for most travelers — families with children, travelers on a short Chengdu window, or anyone whose primary interest is "see pandas, do not rearrange the trip for them." Adding Bifengxia to a three-night Chengdu trip means giving up a half-day in the city for a 300 km round-trip drive.

Do Not Stack It With Dujiangyan
The other panda-adjacent day from Chengdu is the Dujiangyan day, covering the irrigation system and the panda valley. Dujiangyan is northwest of Chengdu, about 60–90 km. Bifengxia is south, about 150 km. Putting the two in the same day is not a real schedule; it is roughly 350 km of driving with two stops on opposite sides of the city, no overnight between them.
The clean choice for a three-night Chengdu itinerary is to commit to one panda day (city base) and one Dujiangyan day, and use the third day for tea houses, the broad-and-narrow alleys, or the Sichuan cuisine evening. Bifengxia is the third panda option, not a same-day add.
When Bifengxia Is the Right Choice
Three trip shapes make Bifengxia worth the drive:
- Second panda day. You have already done the city base on a previous Chengdu trip and want a quieter, smaller-base alternative.
- Volunteer or keeper-for-a-day program. Bifengxia runs a structured volunteer program that the city base does not offer. The volunteer day is booked in advance and runs most of the working day.
- Two-city panda arc. Pairing Chengdu's city base with Bifengxia across two or three days, with Ya'an as the second night. This is a real product for travelers whose main interest is the panda side of Sichuan.
For the volunteer program specifically, the booking is on the Bifengxia base's official channels and the slots fill quickly. Real-name registration against passport is required, and the day runs roughly 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a working lunch. We do not promise specific volunteer dates without confirmation from the venue.
