The Museum Name and the Army Name Are the Same Address
Searches for Terracotta Warriors Museum and Terracotta Army lead to the same place. The site is officially the Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum, and the army of clay soldiers is the headline draw inside it. There is no separate museum building next door with a second ticket. Tickets cover pits 1, 2, and 3, the exhibition hall (the bronze chariots and horses), and the on-site cinema.
The site sits about 40 km east of central Xi'an, in Lintong District. From the city center, plan 60–90 minutes each way by private car, 75–90 minutes by tourist shuttle, or a direct metro-and-bus combination that runs longer but costs less. Pit 1, Pit 2, Pit 3 — and What Half a Day Covers
The three pits are not interchangeable.
- Pit 1 is the main hall — the iconic long trench with the restored vanguard formation. Most tour groups arrive here first. Allow 45–60 minutes at adult pace; longer if you stop to read the placard numbers on individual figures.
- Pit 2 holds the kneeling archers, the cavalry, and the still-unexcavated soil mounds. The excavation is partial, which is the point — you see archaeologists at work behind roped-off trenches. Allow 30–45 minutes.
- Pit 3 is the smallest and the command post. It's the only pit with a roof. Allow 15–20 minutes; it's the easiest to skim.
- Exhibition hall (the bronze chariots and horses) sits between pits 1 and 2. Allow 20–30 minutes; the two half-scale bronze chariots are the main draw.
Half a day at adult pace covers pits 1, 2, and the exhibition hall with the cinema. Pit 3 is the easiest to skip on a tight morning. The full visit — pits 1, 2, 3, exhibition hall, and the on-site cinema — runs 4–5 hours at a reading pace.
Booking Fits the Morning Block
Tickets are released on the official site in real-name windows. The booking rules change without notice; verify the current window on the Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum official site at booking time, not on a 2023 blog post.
- Window: typically 7 days in advance. Peak weeks (National Day week, Lunar New Year week) tighten the window and cap the daily number.
- Real-name registration: each ticket is tied to a single passport. The name on the booking must match the passport exactly.
- Identity check at the gate: passport matching the booking name. A mismatch voids the ticket.
- Tourist guides must hold a Lintong-issued permit; free-lance guides at the gate are not allowed inside the main halls. The site's official commentary is available in a multilingual app and at the on-site cinema.
The morning block is the right shape for the visit. Two reasons. First, the site opens at 8:30 a.m. and tour buses from Xi'an start arriving around 9:30 a.m.; arriving at opening gives you a quieter 30–45 minutes in Pit 1. Second, the pits face east; morning light is on the figures, afternoon light is flat and the trenches look dim. A 1 p.m. visit is not ruined by the light, but the morning visit is sharper.
The Half-Day Shape That Holds
The standard Xi'an four-day corridor slots the army on a dedicated morning, paired with the city wall or the Tang-theme evening the same day. The Terracotta Warriors in the morning, the wall at dusk, the Muslim Quarter for dinner — that is a single full day, and the army does not share it with the Shaanxi History Museum.
If the trip is three days or less, the army takes a full morning on its own. The pit that absorbs the most time is Pit 1; if the group has different paces, split at Pit 1: one half walks through quickly, the other reads the placard numbers, and the group regroups at the cinema before the bus. Don't stack the museum with a Han Tang evening show on the same morning — the day doesn't hold it, and the evening show needs daylight savings adjustment on its own schedule.
What's Off Limits at the Site
Three rules, posted at the gate, that change less often than the booking window.
- No flash photography in any pit. Non-flash is fine; tripods and selfie sticks are not.
- No food or drink inside the excavation halls. Water bottles with sealed lids are tolerated outside the buildings.
- No touching the figures or crossing the roped walkways. The excavation trenches are real working sites, not staged sets.
The site's official rules also prohibit commercial drone operation over the pits without prior permission. A handheld phone camera is fine; a DSLR with a large lens is fine; a drone on a casual flyover is not.
What This Page Does Not Cover
