Customs in China: Border Declarations, Not Table Manners

Customs in China: Border Declarations, Not Table Manners

Two Different Customs, Two Different Pages

Searching "customs in China" usually lands travelers here for one of two reasons, and they are not the same topic. The first is the border counter — China Customs, the red-and-green-channel walk past the officer at the airport, with cash declarations and restricted goods. The second is social customs — how people in China behave at a dinner table or in a temple. The vocabulary overlaps in English; the rules do not.

This page covers the border side. For the social side, the Chinese customs page covers table manners, gift-giving, and temple etiquette. Visa paperwork sits with the consulate, not the customs officer — that topic is on the China travel visa application page.

Green Channel, Red Channel — and the Real Question

At the airport arrivals hall, the customs hall splits into two lanes. The green channel is for travelers carrying nothing to declare. The red channel is for travelers carrying items that exceed the personal allowance, restricted goods, or commercial quantities. The officer at the entry to the lanes watches bags and redirects travelers to the red channel if anything looks like it should be declared.

The honest rule that holds across most cases: if you are unsure, declare. A walk through the red channel adds ten minutes at most; an unreported item that triggers a secondary check at the X-ray or search counter adds hours and can mean a fine or seizure.

The China Customs allowance reference card for the current year sits on the official site of the General Administration of China Customs (customs.gov.cn). The numbers shift — the cash threshold, the personal-gift value, the alcohol and tobacco limits — and they are not the same for every passport. Read the card for the year you are flying, not a blog post from three years ago.

What Travelers Get Stopped For

Three categories cause most of the friction at the red channel:

  • Cash over the threshold. Equivalents of USD 5,000 (or the current threshold) in foreign currency, or CNY 20,000 in renminbi, must be declared. Cash includes foreign banknotes, RMB, and traveler checks. The declaration is paperwork, not a tax — declaring the amount is the point, not avoiding the question.
  • Medicine in original packaging. Personal prescription medicine for the trip is usually fine. Medicine that exceeds a personal-use quantity, controlled substances (narcotics, psychotropics), or animal-derived medicine without documentation can be stopped. Bring prescriptions or a doctor's letter on letterhead if the medicine is non-standard.
  • High-value electronics, cameras, drones, samples. Personal electronics for the trip do not need to be declared. Equipment that looks commercial — fifteen laptops in a suitcase, drones intended for sale, professional camera rigs brought in for paid work — sits in a different category and should go through the red channel.

Food, plants, seeds, animal products (including some traditional medicines and dried seafood), and ivory or any CITES-listed wildlife product are restricted or banned. Do not bring them in.

The Arrival Day Shape This Affects

For travelers on a four-night Beijing itinerary, the customs walk is the last step before the arrivals hall and the meeting point for the private driver. The day shape assumes the customs walk takes fifteen minutes for the green channel, longer if the red channel applies, and that the family then has the full evening and the first night to recover before the first real day in the city.

If your arrival comes with anything you are unsure about, flag it before you walk through the green channel. The cost of the red channel is time; the cost of being wrong on the green channel is the same time plus a fine. For a first Beijing night, those minutes matter.

What TravelToQin Can Help With

If the arrival is part of a private China itinerary, our driver meets the party in the public arrivals hall — after customs and after baggage. We do not escort travelers through customs, and we cannot answer what is or is not allowed at the border. The customs officer decides; the customs reference card decides; we book the ground that starts after the green channel.

Send the entry city, the entry date, and whether anything in your luggage falls outside a normal personal trip. We will tell you which side of the channel that puts you on; the customs reference card for the year decides the rest.

What Must Be Verified Before You Fly

  • Current cash and personal-gift thresholds on the General Administration of China Customs site (customs.gov.cn) for the year.
  • Whether any medicine in your bag is on the restricted list, especially controlled substances or non-personal quantities.
  • Whether drone or commercial camera equipment triggers commercial-quantity rules.
  • Whether your passport or any transit country requires additional declarations on the way out.

Send the dates and the entry city; we will align the arrival-night hotel and the first Beijing (or other city) day with the customs walk actually happens.

Quick Reference

  • Two customs: border counter (this page) and social manners (chinese-customs).
  • Green channel = nothing to declare. Red channel = cash, medicine, electronics, gifts over the threshold.
  • If unsure, declare.
  • Customs thresholds follow the current year on customs.gov.cn — not a travel blog from three years ago.
  • Restricted items include animal products, plants, seeds, ivory, and CITES wildlife products.
  • TravelToQin meets the party in the arrivals hall — after customs, not in it.

Day trip from Guangzhou

We were picked up in a private van for a day trip outside of Guangzhou. We visited the Jurassic Park the waterfalls rafting Mario kart the drive approximately 1 1/2 hours from our hotel. It was very comfortable ride when we first arrived. It was raining, but we were getting wet with some of the experiences that we went on anyway so we didn't matter Stella. Our guide was wonderful and we had such a fun day with her. Some great photo locations in some experiences that I would never have had in Australia. When we arrived at 12 pm, the crowds were very low but as we were leaving around 3 pm it was extremely busy. Lots of tourist buses had arrived. Overall it was a wonderful day. This trip would be best for families, but also adults looking for a thrill. Please be mindful there are a lot of stairs and walking and we did come across a few older people who had difficulty with the stairs.

TraveltoQin Made Our Dream China Holiday Absolutely Perfect! 5 stars and more from start to finish

From the very first moment we contacted TraveltoQin through Instagram, right up until we boarded our flight back home, our entire trip was absolutely seamless. Richard was incredible in organising our itinerary and patiently answering every single question we had in the lead-up to our holiday. Everything was so well thought out and tailored perfectly to our family. Throughout the trip, every driver we had was kind, polite, and professional, and the guides were truly some of the best we’ve ever experienced. A special mention has to go to Yan—she was absolutely fantastic. To say she went above and beyond would be an understatement. Not only was she an amazing guide, but she also helped plan our free time and told us exactly what to do on days we didn’t opt for a guide, ensuring we made the most of every moment. The hotels selected for us ticked all our boxes. I had casually mentioned at one point that my boys love to swim and that we’d prefer hotels with pools. Ivy, who was available 24/7 throughout the trip to answer every question and help with anything we needed, took this on board immediately. She even went as far as checking whether the pools at our booked hotels were actually operational. When she found out that the last hotel in Shenzhen had maintenance on its pool, she proactively offered me not one, but two alternative hotel options—both of which were massive upgrades from what we had originally booked, at absolutely no extra cost. I was genuinely overwhelmed by their kindness, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail. Nothing was ever too much trouble. It was such a pleasure meeting Kevin and Ivy on our last day. One thing that really stood out to me is that this is the first company I’ve ever dealt with that didn’t pressure or push me to leave a review. That alone speaks volumes—they clearly do what they do because they genuinely love their job and care deeply about their clients’ experience. If you’re planning a holiday in China, save yourself the time and go straight to TraveltoQin. I honestly doubt anyone could outdo them in terms of service, attention to detail, and pricing. Just trust them—you’ll be in the very best hands.

Exceptional Tour with Stella!

Stella was an excellent guide and made our trip truly enjoyable. She was punctual and was already waiting for us at our hotel at 10:00 a.m. She provided clear instructions before each stop and thoughtfully prepared raincoats for us. We first visited the main building and then began our hike up the mountain, where we enjoyed the breathtaking scenery and took many wonderful photos. We also had a great time riding the summer toboggan and racing the cars. Stella’s professionalism, kindness, and attention to detail made the entire experience memorable. We highly recommend her and would gladly join another tour with her in the future.

Fantastic Goulong Gorge Experience with Tony Walker

Our family had an absolutely wonderful day trip to Goulong Gorge during our visit to Guangzhou, and a big part of that was thanks to Travel to Qin and our outstanding guide, Tony Walker. From start to finish, Tony was friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful. He made everything easy and stress-free, allowing us to simply relax and enjoy the experience. His enthusiasm, attention to detail, and genuine care for his guests really stood out. Goulong Gorge itself was spectacular, with beautiful scenery, exciting attractions, and unforgettable views. Tony ensured we got the most out of our visit, helping us navigate the attractions, sharing interesting information along the way, and making sure everyone in our family was comfortable and having a great time. If you’re visiting Guangzhou and considering a trip to Goulong Gorge, I highly recommend Travel to Qin and especially Tony Walker as your guide. Exceptional customer care by Team Travel to Qin! (solo female traveller)

I was a solo female traveller. From planning the trip to being taken care of, I fully recommend the team TRAVEL TO QIN. The full time butler service by Ivy , to the tour guide Fish, to the driver Annie.. they provided me with exceptional care and service. Fish was so kind to even be my personal photographer and videographer :) They were so kitti make my birthday also special which was totally not in the plan and surprise to me! They were also on time every day to start the day from picking me up to dropping me off at the station. The unexpected rainy conditions and public holiday perhaps needed a little more guidance for me to prepare in advance. Overall, I'd recommend this team. They are flexible on the plan, willing to accommodate your needs during plan phase, extremely professional and very good customer care. Will surely choose them and Fish next time !!!! Signing off for now.. happy customer

11 days China Holiday July 2026

Right from the planning phase to the execution, Kevin and his company Travel To Quin had been exceptional. We contacted them in Feb for our holiday in July and they meticulously understood our needs and then designed the itinerary accordingly. At China we were greated with a large bouquet of flowers by an english speaking travel guide and a car with driver was available for us everyday. The four star hotels booked were good. The Hilton in Guangzhou was the best. Ivy was nearly available 24/7 during our China stay solving our problems, giving advice, arranging and rearranging bookings etc. The tour guides for our trip were excellent, especially Keena at Shanghai stood out due to her exceptional kindness. During the whole 11 days of our holiday, the company accomodated all our needs and was transparent in their price policies. The company never made us feel that we were in an unknown country, especially Ivy was like an invisible guardian angle for our group, available 24/7 with problem solutions and options. We were a group of 7 consisting of 2 separate families, hence we have different needs, but the company was excellent in catering to the individual requirements of 7 guests. We thoroughly enjoyed our 11 days holiday, where we visiting Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Schenzen. We will definitely recommend Travel to Quin to others for their China travel partner and will use them in our next trip to China as well.
