China Itinerary 2 Weeks: Two Arcs That Survive Travel Days
Most China itinerary 2 weeks templates hide the problem: day six is a train station, day nine is an airport queue, and by day twelve everyone is tired in a hotel lobby. A workable fourteen-day arc names travel days explicitly and chooses either a corridor (three hubs) or one-region depth—not four cities on a poster map.
Quick read:
- Arc A (~14 days): Beijing module → rail day → Xi'an block → rail day → Shanghai/Hangzhou block + buffer.
- Arc B (14 days): Stay inside Yunnan (or similar single province) using a 14-night product skeleton—see Yunnan 14D13N.
- Shorter? Compress to 10 day China itinerary; city-count on the same length is China 14 day itinerary.
Two Arcs Only: Pick Structure Before Cities
Four famous names in fourteen days usually means none are done well. Pick Arc A when first-timers want imperial + terracotta + river city contrast. Pick Arc B when weather, altitude, or slow walks matter more than checklist capitals.
Arc A: 14-Day Skeleton with Travel Days Visible
Days 1–4 — Beijing module

Anchor on Beijing 3D2N or extend with Beijing 5D4N if Mutianyu Great Wall and hutong pace need space. One major wall day—see Mutianyu Great Wall for timing.
Travel Day — Beijing → Xi'an

High-speed rail often beats flying door-to-door on this leg—see China high-speed train vs flying and book high-speed train tickets in China. Count half a day minimum for station transfers and security.
Days 5–8 — Xi'an block
Product bones: Xi'an 4D3N—Terracotta Army, city wall, museum time. Keep one buffer half-day for ticket retries or rain.
Travel Day — Xi'an → East China
Fly or rail to Shanghai/Hangzhou depending on fares; protect an afternoon—not a midnight arrival before a full walk day.
Days 9–12 — Shanghai / Hangzhou

Extract Shanghai 4D3N or Shanghai 6D5N modules: Bund lanes, French Concession walk (French Concession Shanghai), optional Zhujiajiao water town (Zhujiajiao day trip). Choose either Disney or a second water-town day—not both on a tight arc.
Optional Hangzhou add: Hangzhou 2D1N from Shanghai if tea hills matter.
Days 13–14 — Buffer and departure
Hold for delayed trains, rebooking, or a calm last shopping walk. Do not stack a new city here.
Arc B: When 14 Days Should Stay in One Region

Yunnan at fourteen nights follows lowland → gorge → highland logic on Yunnan 14D13N: Kunming entry, Dali–Lijiang arc, Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shangri-La modules, Meili or Lugu when season allows. Season windows: Best time to visit Yunnan; day-count variants: Yunnan itinerary.
Arc B wins when you refuse to ride three overnight trains in ten days.
What to Drop First When 14 Days Still Feel Tight
- Fourth city—always first cut.
- Theme park day if culture was the trip thesis.
- Duplicate old-town evenings when days were already long.
- Back-to-back wall/hike days—space Mutianyu and gorge hikes.
