XIY Is Xi'an — After You Have Already Chosen Xi'an
Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) is the airport for Xi'an. Whether the ticket says XIY, "Xian," or "Xianyang," the destination is the same — and it is in the northwest of the city, roughly 40 km from the city wall. The Terracotta Warriors are in Lintong District, east of the city wall. The city wall itself is inside the old city. These are three different directions.

One thing worth knowing before the flight: Xi'an's airport is not in the city center, and it is not a short taxi ride from the Terracotta Warriors. The drive from the airport to a hotel inside the city wall takes 45 minutes to an hour under normal traffic conditions. The drive from the airport to the Terracotta Warriors is in the opposite direction from the city wall — roughly 25–30 km from the airport toward Lintong, then into the city afterward. This is why the arrival day is not a warriors day.
International Arrivals Leave Through T5
As of February 2025, all international and Hong Kong–Macau–Taiwan arrivals at Xi'an Xianyang International Airport use Terminal 5 (T5). Domestic flights use Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. The terminals are in different areas of the airport and require inter-terminal transport — not a walk through a connecting corridor.
If you are arriving on an international flight, the arrival process is in T5. If the connecting domestic flight or the ground transport out of the airport is from T2 or T3, allow additional time for the inter-terminal transfer. This is not a short walk. The airport advises checking the specific terminal assignment on the day, as terminal assignments shift for some routes.
After clearing immigration and customs at T5, the ground transport options are taxi, airport bus, or a pre-arranged private vehicle. There is no direct metro connection from T5 into the city at this time.
The Pits Are East; Keep the Arrival Night Inside the Wall
The Terracotta Warriors site is in Lintong District, east of the city wall — roughly 25–30 km from the airport and in a different direction from the city center. The standard four-night Xi'an itinerary puts the warriors on a full morning, separate from the wall day and separate from the arrival night.
The arrival night belongs inside the city wall. This is where the hotels are most convenient for the wall itself, the Muslim Quarter food streets, and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda area. It is not near the warriors. Arriving late and then driving to a hotel near the wall — rather than somewhere convenient for the warriors the next morning — is the correct order.
The standard four-night Xi'an shape:
- Day 2: Terracotta Warriors. Full morning, by private vehicle. The site opens at 8:30 a.m.; arriving at opening is the right move. The vehicle waits and returns to the city for lunch and the afternoon.
- Day 3: City wall and downtown. The wall is walkable or bikeable along the top. The Muslim Quarter is nearby for lunch. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is in the south of the city.
